Deadly Crash On I-20 In Arlington Caused By Drunk Driver

A man who was DWI rear-ended a tanker truck on eastbound Interstate 20 early this morning, according to this news report on WFAA.

The drunk driver then lost control of his car underneath the New York Avenue bridge and crashed into a Sports Utility Vehicle. Both vehicles hit the center median at highway speed.

Tragically, Elaine Plummer, 57, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. My prayers go out to her family.

Three passengers in the drunk’s car were seriously injured in the collision and were rushed by ambulance to JPS and other hospitals. The truck driver was fortunately not hurt.

Police determined that alcohol and speed were responsible for this horrible crash. They expect to arrest the driver shortly. I anticipate that he will be charged with one count of intoxication manslaughter and three counts of intoxication assault.

What a nightmare.

We’re Number One!

Texas has far more drunk driving accidents than any other state in the nation. Texas is first in the United States in drunk driving deaths, with 1,296 fatalities in 2012.

This catastrophic problem is especially prevalent in our Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex area. Just last year 121 people were killed and 1,261 others were seriously injured by DWI or DUI drivers in Tarrant and Dallas Counties.

In addition, alcohol-related crashes injured almost 17,000 Texans that year. Arrests of individuals involved in DWIs reached nearly 90,000. The cost to Texas taxpayers? Over $6 billion per year. Those numbers are obscene.

Drunk driving wrecks are often the most serious ones — often head-on or driver’s side-impact crashes at maximum “devil may care” speeds.

We Texans should not have to put up with such dangerous, irresponsible behavior. We should demand stricter enforcement of DWI laws and tougher jail sentences and fines.

We Can Help You

Also, those people who have been injured or who have lost loved ones due to drunk driving collisions can file a claim or a lawsuit to recover their damges, including hospital and doctor bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages that Texas law allows. We will fight to get your the money you deserve.

I’ve been representing Texans injured in accidents for most of my life. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976 and from the SMU School of Law in Dallas in 1979. My main office is located in Fort Worth but I have offices throughout the Metroplex and in Houston, I only represent people who have been injured by accidents involving cars, trucks, 18 wheelers, bicycles and motorcycles — often hit by drivers who are DWI.

If you want an experienced Board Certified Fort Worth personal injury attorney who will provide you with compassionate legal representation, please contact my office today at 817-885-8000 or toll-free at 1-888-801-8585 to schedule a free initial consultation. We can send a representative to your hospital room, home, or other location to meet with you and answer all of your questions, should this be more convenient.
